Adult Thumb Sucking - How Can I Stop?

There are some problems in life for which there seem to be limited or even no effective help available.  For example an adult who is habitually sucks their thumb may be at a loss as to how to stop thumb sucking.

Thumb sucking is a habit that usually begins in childhood.  Whilst most children will outgrow this habit, usually by age six or seven, for some it does not stop naturally and can continue indefinitely into adulthood.  No one really knows why the habit continues in some people - it might be that they were going through a difficult time at the point when they would normally have stopped and so the natural stopping point was passed by, leaving the habit intact.  And it is quite difficult to find ways to stop thumb sucking as it is often not considered enough of a serious problem by those who do not suffer with the problem.

Thumb sucking is a habit which is often practised in private as many adults who suck their thumb are embarrassed to be seen doing this.  Generally they find the habit to be comforting and enjoyable so are reluctant to let it go.

For others, the habit incorporates thumb nail biting, biting the skin around the nail and biting or tearing the thumb cuticle causing both pain and unsightly thumbs.

Sufferers tend to seek help when the benefits of stopping the habit are outweighed by the embarrassment of being caught doing it.   For example, they may be entering into a new close relationship and they do not want their new partner or his/her friends to become aware of the their habit.

Thumb sucking can also cause serious problems with the shape of the teeth and palate – frequently the upper teeth are pushed up and out.  Although this can be corrected by dental braces, it is necessary to deal with the underlying habit first so that the correction is not wasted.  So the sufferer may need to make a decision to get help to stop the thumb sucking habit.

When someone is ready to relinquish the habit of thumb sucking, Hypnotherapy is generally very successful as it deals directly with the unconscious part of the mind to change this automatic habit.  Treatment is focussed specifically on this one issue and is undertaken sympathetically and effectively.

At The Hypnotherapy Centre in Windsor, treatment for adults to stop thumb sucking is usually undertaken during one 90 minute session at a cost of £90 or alternatively over two separate one hour sessions at a total cost of £120
