Sports Performance
It is widely accepted that hypnosis can be a very helpful technique to enable sports people to reduce ‘performance anxiety, e.g. to help golfers with those first tee jitters. Indeed many athletes will attest to the important role that strategies such as positive visualisations and relaxation techniques, play in their preparation.
However, for the the elite athlete, who is already accustomed to performing under extreme levels of stress hypnosis has much more to offer.
Frequently athletes will report that their experience of hypnotic trance is very similar to the ‘flow’ experience of performance. Indeed most athletes find it very easy to enter quite deep states of trance, within which they can develop and utilise hypnotic phenomena to enhance their sports performance. For example, an equestrian might be encouraged to develop (and utilise when performing) the hypnotic phenomenon of ‘hyperesthesia’ (enhanced sensation) to enhance the ‘soft hands’ necessary to perform at her peak.
Paradoxically, it can be important to develop the ability to remember to forget. For example, it can be useful in ‘crunch’ situations to develop amnesia for unhelpful contextual factors such as the score, the meaning of the game or even who your opponent is.
In summary, whether you are keen amateur who just wants to feel relaxed enough to give your best, or an elite athlete who wants to focus on a particular aspect of your performance hypnosis may offer you the edge that you seek.
