Trichotillomania, Hair Pulling

What is Trichotillomania?

Trichotillomania (TTM) or Hair Pulling, which is known as an “impulse-control disorder”, is where someone feels a strong compulsion to pull their hair out.  This may be hair on the head, the eyelashes, eyebrows or other body hair.

It is an uncomfortable habit to have because the effects are often visible to others as bald patches may be visible on the head, face or body.  This often leads to embarrassment and a consequential reduction in confidence and self esteem, which in turn tends to perpetuate the habit.

What causes Trichotilllomania?

Trichotillomania is often exacerbated during periods of stress although, like many habits, it continues because it easier to continue than to try and stop. And it can also provide a form of comfort as the urge to pull is satisfied giving a temporary sense of relief.

So why do people continue to do this?  Often there is a strong urge to pull out a hair and tension grows until pulling out the hair gives a sense of relief.

Can Hypnosis help Trichotillomania?

Hypnotherapy for trichotillomania helps by directing suggestions at the unconscious level of the mind where the impulse is stored. If someone is at the point where they want to stop this habit then hypnosis can be a very effective therapeutic treatment for most sufferers.
